I was all pumped to hunt early opener at Laurel this year. Did some scouting and everything and then cuz of work I missed the whole week. Then I missed the statewide opener too. First night I could get in a tree was Thursday. Didn't even see a bird or squirrel for all 3 hours of my evening sit. I was about to start packing up with a few minutes of legal light left, but previous experience on these WMA's has taught me these deer don't like to come out till it's almost completely dark. At 6:58 pm with literally 30 seconds of legal light left, out walked the first deer. No antlers I could see so I decided to aim and let fly. Heard it run 20 yards into a huge blackberry bramble/thicket and crash. Several hundred thorn cuts later- found out shot me a spike instead. But meat is meat and he was heavy for such a young one. Either way, ice was broken. Thank God deer season is here!

Congratulations! For years I never had any luck with evening deer hunts on the farm and then I started sitting until the last legal light. Well, that was the problem - all deer movement happened no earlier than those last 10 minutes.

Absolutely! I'd say 90% of the deer I harvest fall into this last few minutes of daylight.
