Had a day off & decided I wouldn't turkey hunt or fish with the cold & wind. So, I sat around the house & watched the Smoker all day. Just had some chips with sammiches, kept it simple.

About cooking it in a oven or over hot fire pit it's not the internal that's the trick , it's the low and slow cooking.
The pork butt is a tough peice of meat and needs to be slow cooked.
Using a fire pit is fine as long as you use the indrect heat cooking. Don't have any hot coals under the butt but push the coals to the sides and like kdxdude said take up to 8 or more hours to cook it until the internal temp hits around 200.
