Dauphin Island

Looks like I might be going to Dauphin Island (Dolphin for us TN folk) for a few days. Has anyone had any experience surf fishing here? I am not sure what really to do as I have never fished here before.

I do plan on flounder gigging though, hopefully the tides will work in my favor.

Do jubilees happen on Dauphin Island?

I honeymooned on Dauphin Island. Didnt get out much other than to golf with the bride, and hit the beach, but the pier had people fishing on it. Cant believe that was 16 years ago next month!

I hear it is nice and peaceful there, pretty excited about going to a beach with no "spring breakers".

I have had good success with whiting in the surf. Very good tasting fish and fun to catch. I don't think the pier on the beach is even fishable anymore due to storms in the last few years moving sand around and leaving it mostly out of water.

For whiting, cut squid works well. Just make sure to use small pieces (thumbnail size) and small hooks. 1 oz to 2 oz. pyramid sinkers will hold your bait in one place. They make a slip sinker rig so that when a fish bites, it doesn't pull on the sinker and will take the bait.

Oh yea, I forgot. If you can learn how to catch sand fleas, your success on whiting will go up drastically as that is there natural food source.

Fish the jetties for shepepshead! In the past I have used the hermit crabs crawling all over the rocks for bait and I have caught a ton! For fishing off the beach, look for irregularities on the beach and fish there.

Dauphin Island is where I went bowfishing for stingrays this summer. The surf fishing is great. There is a small store right when you get on the island called "Ship & Shore." They sell frozen squid. You can catch just about anything with the squid. We were catching sharks and redfish.

I grew up on Dauphin Island and was there just a few weeks ago. My experience surf fishing is limited because we always had boats. August fishing can be tough...but August floundering is one of the best times of the year. You will have bigger flounder on the Gulf side, more but smaller flounder on the north side.

Try to find an inshore charter for a day and catch some speckled trout and redfish. Have fun...love that place.

OH...and no jubilees on the island...that happens almost exclusively on the eastern Shore of the Bay.

I went on an in-shore charter trip that is based off Dauphin Island a few years ago. It was called A-Team Charters, and the captain put us on a bunch of speckled trout. We also caught a bunch of sand sharks and a really big black drum.

Re: the comments about sand fleas, I think those are traditionally a pompano bait, although perhaps whiting would eat them just as much. I've always thought that you needed more surf action to have pompano around, but BamaProud would know more about whether they are there.

If you want to stick to the do-it-yourself fishing trips, the Gulf Shores Pier is a fun place to go have a shot at different/bigger fish, and it's cheap. Not sure how that works out with your ferry schedule, though.

I think I am just gonna stop by the local tackle shop and ask about the rigs and bait for beach fishing. I will keep a mental backup of all the info I have gathered so far just in case, but I honestly just want to sit on the beach and relax. If I catch a fish or two great! If not, all I have lost is what I got invested in the bait.

I will be roaming the beach at night looking to gig some flounder though!

Used a mirror-lure to catch countless ladyfish and pompano's (under size as well). Cut shrimp seems to produce the most catch, but nothing worth keeping.

Im hoping we can get into some trout before we leave, but the relaxing time on the beach is worth every minute and if we dont catch a another fish I could care less.

Next time I come back here I will bring crab traps for sure.

Get you a popper cork and live shrimp for bait...Cast out and jerk it a time or two...You should be able to find one at a local shop...We use them because the popping sound as you know sounds like fish feeding...With a treble hook and a live shrimp you should get into some reds or trout...
