Took my daughter to West TN this past weekend to try and shoot her first deer. I worked up a great shooting load using 64gr Bonded Nosler's in the .223AI @ 3,300ft/s. I also took along my .243AI loaded with some 105gr Scenars @ 3,100ft/s since I was going to look at 118 acres that I might lease for next year from a gentleman that has several farms.

Friday evening we had the pleasure of hunting the gentleman's private farm.

Here we are in the stand looking over the corn field and hardwood river bottom with the .223AI.

Doe comes out at 120yds and after a lengthy motivational speech and deep breathes she pulls the trigger and makes a perfect shot through the shoulders. Bullet passed through both shoulders and exited, deflating both lungs.

The next day we hunt the 118 acres I'm looking at leasing and we take both rifles. The morning hunt was bad with winds at 20-30mph in our face but we did see a few deer but they were at the other end of the 600+ yard corn field.

The evening hunt was much better the wind had died down a little and the sun had came out. After the sun started to set several doe's came out and started feeding nine all together. Finally a big doe comes to within 186yds and I switch out the .223AI for the .243AI which she has never shot. At first she was hesitant about the "bigger" cartridge but finally agreed to use it after seeing that both had Remington 700 on them, she said "their the same right?" I said yes but this one just shoots a bigger bullet. She steadies the gun and takes her time waiting on the big doe to turn broadside and makes a perfect shot right behind the shoulder. The doe runs about 20yds and gives up the ghost. We get to the deer and I'm very impressed with her shot and the performance of the 105gr Scenar. Going to post some pics of the 105gr performance later. What a great weekend we had.

A big thanks to Greg Sallee "sallee-bo" for allowing us to stay with him and his lovely wife who can flat out cook some good food. Great seeing you again my friend and many thanks for helping make it a great weekend!

Aint nothing like taking your kids hunting and watching them make that first kill. Memories that last a lifetime.
Congrats to you both!

Enjoy the time! My daughter started hunting with me at the age of 11 and is still hunting with me 13 years later. I became mostly a guide for the next 8 years or so. I've lost count how many she's shot with the .243.

She's already laying claim to my .223AI. I don't know about that but if I work it right it could give me another reason to build another for my son.

Kimber Montana with a 8" twist and dupe the factory contour. Ok, I'm going to need another job.
I already have a #2 Bartlein and McMillan ready for a custom .243AI, one of each caliber for each kid...I hope my middle one doesn't decide she wants to hunt.

Jeff it was a pure pleasure having you and "Princess" over last week-end. I was honored to have a small part in helping her get her first deer. My home is always open to you and yours. The lease is yours if you want it.
