Danger at the Range

Daaaaang! Last outing to the range, the rangemaster quickly showed us some paint drippings on the shooting platform.....but they weren't paint drippings, it was blood! Apparently some young adults were up there, and were informed of safety as usual, but he went back to retrieve another rifle from their truck, and pulled it out, barrel first, AND IT WAS LOADED. Trigger caught on something and fired, striking the young man in the arm, and passing on thru the range area, fortunately not striking anyone else on deck. Good gosh, that's scary. :shock: My hope is that they are ok, and banned from the site for good.

Yep, I was at the (now closed) range on Walnut Grove in the Agricenter when a guy was shot via accidental discharge.

Was downrange when someone sat down at a bench and chambered a round, this was at MSSA. Another member got in touch with office, range officer came out had a talk, the guy left. Told me they banned him for life. I took it the conversation did not go well.

You can never be too safe.

I was at the Moose range in Knoxville when I observed during a COLD Range period a father was teaching his son hands on gun handling at the shooting bench when personnel were hanging targets down range. This issue was brought to this mans attention and he ignored the advice. Some people just don't know any better and they pass their bad habits down too. I was always taught when the range is cold you are hands off all firearms, even to put them in cases until the range goes hot again.

I was at a range in Dallas over labor day and they actually made you step behind a line while the range was cold, and you could not approach your shooting bench. Before they called a cold range, they made sure you had targets or whatever you needed from your table. Then until the range was called live if you approached the shooting bench you were kicked out and range card tore up. I definitely felt safe hanging targets downrange with this rule, but this rule was put in place because something had happened in the past.

One thing I enjoy about MSSA is that they have zero tolerance for safety issues.

Glad I can walk out back and shoot. I've been to public ranges before, to many uneducated idiots at those places!

At MSSA, there are flashing red lights when the range is cold and a yellow line separating the benches. No one is allowed in front of the line and chamber flags are required. I once took a guest and instructed him carefully not to traverse the line when the range is cold. Sure enough, the line went cold and I went down range to set up targets. I look back to see him fiddling with his gun. I went nuts as there were others also on the range. Fortunately, no one saw him but me. I make sure I keep guests within spitting distance from now on.
