DA load for a youngster

I think I saw a post once where DA had a load reccomendation for a youngster. Got my boy a .50 cva wolf and he is dying to shoot it. I don't want to make him gunshy from a hard kick. Thanks for any info.

My son uses 64 grains triple 7 under a 240 grain hornady xtp. Very accurate, and should be fine up to 80 yards.

Complete pass through last year for my wife using the same load. Distance was 30 yards. Deer dropped after 45 yards.

Pretty simple really, I weigh every load, bullet, and sabot on a digital scale. I was trying to get a few shots in before dark when I was working the load up for my son. The 777 was in a dry box in the house with the powder measure. I measured 65 grains took it to the garage, put it on the scales and it read 64. Loaded the Knight, walked to the bench fired at 50 yards. The shot was 1.5 inches high and 1 inch right(knight was boresighted). I just continued measuring to 64 grains. Not that hard actually.

If I wasn't thick-skinned that might have hurt my feelings DA. Maybe there was some other "liquid" in your Cheerios yesterday?

I started measuring everything several years ago when a friend of mine showed me how much difference there can be between the powder loads you get when using a measure. There is often a difference in bullet weight, and to a lesser extent sabot weight as well.

Oh yeah, my cousin's 8 year old son shoots the 240 xtp over 70 grains 777 loose. Killed his first buck with it last year.

i wasnt trying to be a smart alec but
black powder and black powder substitutes are suppose to be measured in volume not grains

ie 100 gn by volume


smokless powder measured in grains


i see how you could do it but if you were near max charges you could get in trouble as the volume may vary between bottles of powder

Very correct DA, but I'm no where near max charges in any of my smokepoles.

P.S. - I was just giving you a hard time.
