Czech Roe Deer

Here in Europe Roe Deer are mainly hunted. If you are not familiar with them they are a lot smaller than a whitetail. Here are pics of two I took last May and a brief discription:

Body length 3.12�4.43 ft
Shoulder height 2.13�2.46 ft
Weight of 33�66 lb
Older bucks in good conditions develop antlers up to 8 � 10 in long
Maximum antler points is 6
Face hair turns grey with age

Pretty small, but still fun to hunt.

Thanks. It is so much different being able to hunt in Europe. I was able to go on this hunt only because friends loaned me their rifle and it was Czech and not Germany.

I am trying to get my German hunting license (called a jadgshein). To get a license there are three different test: written, shooting, and verbal.

The written and verbal test will cover hunting techniques, animal biology of several types of animals (identification, size/age, # teeth, antler/horn phases, gestation, rut, etc), diseases, formal names, conservation, forestry protection,animal damage prevention, gun laws, weapon handling) to mention a few items.

The shooting test consist of two rifle test at a stationary target at 100 meters and a moving target (boar) at 50 meters. And a shotgun test at a running Hare at 50 meters using a 12 guage.

Once I pass all these test then I must purchase a gun safe, and hunters insurance for 500K euro personal and 50K euro property damage. Then I can pay ~250 euro for a hunting license, which allows me to own a weapon and ammo in Germany and I can go hunting legally!

I miss being able to go to Walmart to get my license.

That kind of hassle to own a gun and to hunt in Germany is what the anti NRA types on this forum are wishing for.

Aren't you suppose to wear hunter green blazers, ties, pointy hats, and lederhosen as well as sing the proper songs after a successful kill?

lol, they do have their clothing requirements and rituals after a successful hunt. I'll pass on owning/wearing lederhosen and breaking out in song. But, I do accept the schuetzenbruch to place in the right side of my hat and place the Letzter Bissen (last bite) in the deers mouth then exchange waidmannsheil/waidmannsdank (congrat/thanks).
