Iowa game farm test positive for CWD. Weird thing to me is he was rigorously tested for almost a decade then all of a sudden his deer test positive. Where did it come from? Wild deer?

I read a article a while back about WY mule deer herds, I think it has the largest contamination of CWD of any wild herd. A doctoral student tagged a bunch of wild muleys, most of which tested positive for CWD. She is going to follow them and see how they do; how long they live, produce offspring, etc.

Aside from stopping the transport of infected deer not a lot can be done from what I have read. Basically scientist know very little about this disease. Its hard and expensive to test wild deer and we all know they do not follow state lines.

Does TN have some sort of emergency plan in place if this disease was ever discovered?

This is why we need to prevent deer farming from coming to TN. You mention the doctoral student tested animals and they are positive for CWD. I wasn't aware of a test that can be applied to a live animal. I thought it was always a brain sample that was needed to test. I bet she is tracking a herd that is known in the past to have had the disease and she is testing any that are found dead. Perhaps she has tracking collars on the herd.

Nope, they test the tonsils of the live deer.

She is following them on the winter range then hopefully into the summer range where they fawn. Then cross referencing those with CWD to see if they gave birth.

Prion diseases are very complex epidemiologically. Be tough to eradicate if it does come to Tennessee. Also biologically some of the best preventatives are simple management techniques: population density, habitat, and food source availability.
 
Let me correct myself. Best preventative is to not introduce it to our herd, but IF introduced things mentioned would hopefully decrease rate of spread.
