I hunted the last 6 days in Mississippi. I was amazed at the nonchalance toward CWD. I don't know if it's the area I was in or how much of MS has been affected, but the guys I talked to down there don't give it a 2nd thought. Just odd that here in TN everyone including TWRA is lazer focused on it and 100 miles south of the state line nobody cares. Tonight I plan to read up on Mississippi's history with CWD, particularly the area where I hunt.

Most down here don't want to think about it... if you take a deer to get tested, and it tests positive, the state implements the CWD containment zone regulations and bans feeding for a 25mile radius. And hunting without a feeder in MS just isn't hunting :)

The original case came from the south delta. That year, MDWFP tested an additional approx. 1000 animals from the zone. None tested positive. The following year, one more case was discovered.

Then the big outbreak on the TN border was discovered the year prior to TN discovering it in Fayette county. Quite a few positives from there. A couple more positives between North MS and Vicksburg.

To my knowledge, there have been no positives discovered around Starkville, so you should be good for a few more years.

How was the hunting postrut? 2nd rut should be kicking in there in another couple weeks.

CWD has been in Wisconsin for years. They have settled to the fact that it's a part of the herd and have moved on. Personally, I see it as a waste to spend a million on an incinerator as West Tn has enough positive cases that we have CWD now whether or not they use that incinerator.

There isn't a state that can honestly say by spending millions we have stopped cwd.they claim to have contained it.atleast till they begin testing outside of there normal area. It's just a money racket to me.cwd was in Wisconsin in the 60-70 s when they brought deer to Tennessee so whyget excited now

What source do you have for the BS on the 60-70s? Link to any article that says Wisconsin had documented CWD at that point?

And, if it is a money racket, who is making the money off of it? It is costing the state DNRs millions of dollars in testing and monitoring plus some lost license sales. So, who is getting rich from it?

Laughable.

So the twra never imported deer from Wisconsin. there is a multi million dollar incinerator being built in Fayette county for free I guess. The test are free. Wardens are taking samples on there own time , biologist are donating there time.according to the people who are supposed to know it can stay in the ground for eternity. So just because a test was positive today doesn't mean it wasn't already there.Who is to say that cwd wasn't here way before we tested. Well I guess it's because ( the cervid herd wasn't eradicated) Either way if it's of God twra can't do nothing with it. If it's of man it will go away when the creator of the mess gets ready. Just believe Epstein committed suicide and pitbulls killed everyone.

You are making ZERO sense.

Again, if it is a money making racket on somebody's side, who is making the money? You have shown where it is costing TWRA major money in trying to deal it it. So, where is the money MAKING racket?

And, yes, TWRA imported deer from Wisconsin decades before the disease was even identified. Do you have any documentation that the deer came from any area where there was a known problem? Any documentation that CWD had even been found in Wisconsin until decades later?

I didn't thinks so.

So cwd doesn't exist until the test showed up. And the twra doesn't pay those people.twra is a tax we pay to hunt. It's our money not twra.

Riddle me this-
If CWD was imported decades ago by TWRA, why hasn't it showed up on or around WMAs that were used for restocking?

I'd like to think TWRA would rather spend money on extravagant pay raises or bonuses, maybe a private jet instead of incinerators but what do I know. TWRA employees are salaried, not hourly, so extra work is just extra work or other work not getting done. I doubt they enjoy slogging in guts or dealing with biohazard protocols.

I have tried to read this multiple times and I just don't understand the reasoning behind this.

There are people who don't believe everything told. How many deer have been tested from the transplant area? The deer were pen raised and spread across the state from the article I read. So if that happened cwd could have been scattered around. What if it's always been here and we just discovered it because of testing? All we know is there has been a knee jerk reaction to this. when was Tennessee testing for cwd?

The weather was terrible Thursday and Friday. We sat in shooting houses and watched it rain. And I mean rain. Friday afternoon we had to leave the shooting house 30 minutes before legal shooting time ended because the creek between us and the truck had swelled to the point that we were about to be cut off. Saturday the weather was good and Sunday even better. Saw one high speed chase and if you saw a doe you better get ready because there was a buck trailing 30 seconds behind. Deer really moved well Saturday and Sunday. Just didn't see any big boys. All the does were being trailed by young bucks. What do you make of that?

Usually when young bucks are trailing it means you are a week to 10d away from breeding (or there is a terrible age structure on the property, which is doubtful in that part of MS). I suspect you hit right between 1st and 2nd rut. Older bucks are def cruising in daylight, but aren't going to waste energy chasing unreceptive does.

I'm seeing the same thing as 1st rut is ramping up. Saw a 2.5 yo 4pt trailing a doe this eve. Also saw a set of orphaned doe fawns, which makes me think momma may be in heat, as no does have been killed from that part of my lease

There is a rumor/conspiracy theory out there that TWRA knew about CWD long before they announced it. Something about waiting on the farm bill that designated billions to fight CWD to be approved, then jumping in line for their share. I think this is where the "money racket" stuff continues to come from. It sounded like a bunch of conjecture to me, so I've never even looked into the Farm Bill connection.

That was my amateur opinion. I figured the mature bucks were waiting on the does to get hot before they wasted their time. Meanwhile the young bucks don't know any better and are hanging close hoping for some action. The bad news is my birthday is this week and my girlfriend has made all kinds of plans and I'm not going to be able to go this weekend. :bash:

They jumped the gun then. Neither it nor a bill that would fund CWD research have been more than introduced. Let's not allow facts to interfere with a good government conspiracy theory though.

I'd like to see a map of all the positive CWD locations in TN and MS on the same map. From an epidemiology standpoint it should be fairly apparent where the disease started.....How it got started in TN is the "fifty million dollar" question.......

There are so many conspiracy theories about CWD it is astounding. I think a lot of it comes from the pro-baiting crowd. They are mad as helll that their precious feeders have been outlawed. I made the mistake of commenting on the TWRA Fakebook page against baiting and had to delete my comment before they showed up at my door with tar and feathers. These people are serious about their corn and if you disagree they get NASTY.

I thought it was brought South by hunters bringing deer carcasses home from Wisconsin and Michigan?

It's crazy how few positives MS has in Marshall County but not that surprising knowing that most folks there don't care. It's crazier knowing that MS discovered it first which is what spurred twra to increase testing in Fayette and Hardeman which found our problem. The scariest part is seeing how far it is spread in Mississippi. If all the north MS cases did happen to originate from the TN hot zone, there's a good chance we have it all the way to Kentucky.

Or, maybe it came from MS and they are not testing as much.

Here is a map from Mississippi CWD annual report showing positives from Tennessee and Mississippi from 2018 season. Report was published this pas summer. Report shows that MS tested 8700+ in 2018/2019. They have sampled 4800 so far this season and looks like they have 19 suspect positives (out for 2nd round of tests).

Definitely looks like it's spreading from a location in Southeast Fayette Co., TN or Southwest Hardeman Co...........
