There was recently a post or two concerning skinning a deer out and transporting the hide. The new regs were unclear as to whether it had to be tanned or could leave the county green. I've been informed that the hide can be moved as a green hide without being tanned first. You still have to clean the skull after skinning out but the hide off a buck you may want mounted is legal. This came straight from the horse's mouth at the regional level.

Hides are sent off to be tanned by the taxidermist doing the work. The thing is you have to get the hide to the taxidermist to do so. If that involves leaving a "hot" county into one that's not you can't take the hide still attached to the head across those lines. How are you going to get it there with the new regs? You'll have to cape it out thus this hide information being passed along.

Why not just take it to a taxidermist in same county? They can get hide tanned, de brain the skull and transfer it to a taxidermist of your choosing...new money making oppurtunity.

Seriously though, when is the last time that you personally mounted a buck? You pass so many that a taxidermist would starve.

Personally, I haven't had a mount done in 20+ years. I do keep the racks. For the last 20 years I've done skull mounts. I seriously doubt I'll ever have another mount done.

Remember the Ray Stevens song? "When you kill a big buck get a taxi you have known."

It might look like Larry, Moe, or Curly when a stranger mounts your deer."

I'm slow. It took me twice to learn that lesson-never again. :D
