I noticed while sighting my new wolf that I was having some hang fires. Probably had 3 out of 17 shots. I am using CCI 209M primers and of course the BH209 Powder. This is my first time using the 209 primers. Converted to inline from an old knight #11 caps and I noticed some of the primers didn't fit snug as I expected they should.

Is there supposed to be some "play" when the primers is placed?
Are the hang fires due to the need for a shim kit? Seems that would help the "loose" primer fitting. But I'm new to the 209 world.

Anyone have some insight for me?

Are you using the CVA BH209 breech plug? That could be some of the problem.

Yes I am using the bh209 breech plug. Are you saying the breech plug is the problem or if I wasn't using the one for bh209 powder?

Re: CVA Wolf BH209 breech plug hang fires

Yes there is a Western Powders brand breech plug. It comes with drill bits to drill out the carbon build up. If you bought the CVA breech plug and are not drilling out the carbon build up in the flame channel there is your problem. It does not take many shots for carbon build up to build. About 15 shouts and you really need to be cleaning that flame channel out. As a rule of thumb I suggest every 5 shots but that might just be being anal.

Re: CVA Wolf BH209 breech plug hang fires

Let me get this straight as I am confused now. The cva breech plug made for using bh209 is causing the hang fire issue?

The flame channel may appear on inspection to be clear but looks can be deceiving. Get a 3mm drill bit and clean out the flame channel. Don't use a drill crank by hand. You will be shocked how much stuff comes out.

BTW I think you will find the Win 209 are a better fit and do a better job. FYI

Yeah.. They are not made to the same standard as the western plug.

But get a 3mm drill bit.. Rig up a wooden dowel or buy a hand crank and clean out the flame channel. It should fix your issue

Re: CVA Wolf BH209 breech plug hang fires

Im fairly sure both the Western Powders plug and the CVA BH209 plug use a 1/8" drill bit for cleaning the flash channel.

A #32 or 3mm bit is for the standard CVA plug.

Re: CVA Wolf BH209 breech plug hang fires

Very irritating. Hope it goes boom if needed in the morning.

Does CVA acknowledge theirs is not good?

Well if you can find a drill bit in the garage 1/8 or 3mm whatever

You can clean out the flame channel and you will have a better than average chance,

If you have not loaded it yet after you have cleaned the flame channel

Take a patch and seat it down your bore with your ram rod with your jag. Fire a primer, the ramrod should move slightly . Now pull your ramrod out and inspect the patch, you should have anywhere from a pinhole to the whole center of your patch blown out.

No! CVA sells them all day long and happy to take your money.

Actually you can modify your CVA plug to use Savage Vent liners. I think that is the way to go. Use the link above and do a search, A guy by the name of Ron will modify it for you for the Savage Vent for $25 bucks or so. You replace the vents every 500 rounds or so and only have to clean the flame channel out every 50 shots or so. Much less blowback

Re: CVA Wolf BH209 breech plug hang fires

CVA's blackhorn209 breech plug is just fine, so is western powders.

The loose primer fit is actually a problem, it breaks the seal and all the gasses/particles blow out around the primer and you CAN get a hang fire, even with the western powders breech plug.

Order a bag of these and drop it into the breech plugs primer pocket. Yes, it will take a little more effort snapping the action closed with a primer installed, but this will only last a handful of shots until the o rings breaks in and sizes down. This will make for a complete, blow by free primer set up and put ALL of the heat into the breech plug/powder charge.

Why the guy is saying cva's blackhorn209 plug is no good I do not know. Unless its the flat faced breech plug that comes with the factory gun set up, then yes, its iffy with blackhorn209, especially with loose ' head space'..

Check your firing pin bushing, is it level with the frame or a bit deeper? One that sits deeper can cause even more blow by issues.

Re: CVA Wolf BH209 breech plug hang fires

It looks like the firing pin is pretty flush. I had a difficult time getting a screwdriver in it to remove the firing pin and clean it. I'm pretty skeptical of modifying the firing pin mechanism. Is this the same as the shin kit that is talked about?

The shim will help with the blowback but I don't think it's the cause of your misfires, your misfires are a combination of the carbon build up in the breech plug and your need to switch to W209 primers.

Walmart seeks these drill bits in a kit for like $5 bucks. You can use the 1/8 one to clean out your flame channel.

To remove the firing pin watch a video on YouTube. To,do it right you need a set of gun smithing screw drivers. Chapman makes a entry level set. http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools ... d4979.aspx

You could, grind down a reg screw driver on a bench grinder for this one project if you must but a good set of gun smithing screw drivers are worth their weight in gold.

I was able to get the firing pin out and clean it well. I also used the 1/8" bit and cleaned the breech plug of the carbon build up.

Thanks for all the assistance. I will look into the screwdrivers also!!

Awesome. Just curious when you got your CVA plug did it come with a install wrench? And if so did you crank down really hard on it to seat it?

You should have heard a sort of pop sound when it was fully seated. You might go back and see if you can get any more cranks with it now. Could be a head space issue but I sort of doubt it, your action probably would not be closing normally if it wasn't.

Re: CVA Wolf BH209 breech plug hang fires

It did come with a wrench. I tightened it. I did not hear a pop though. Maybe I should try again. I am able to tighten all the way in or at least it looks like it is. There is no space from barrel to plug.

It's not so much as a pop as it is a crunching sound. When the threads go to seat. You want to crank like you think you are going to over crank it in that's for sure. Anyways could not hurt to try that.

I think between what all you have done your misfires should have gone away.

Re: CVA Wolf BH209 breech plug hang fires

Just FYI, I've had no issues with my new Wolf, CVA Blackhorn Breechplug, and Federal 209A primers. They fit perfectly and I don't pull and clean the Breechplug until I'm done shooting. You might've noticed that the manual shows and stresses cleaning the firing pin every regular cleaning. By the way, I didn't hear anything when I tightened my BH Breechplug the first time with the wrench, either. Good luck with it. Love mine.
