CVA Wolf and BH 209, reloaded

Well, after getting a new CVA Wolf earlier this year, I'm finally taking time today to sight it in. GMB54 I'll be using BH again, but this time I'll be using the modified BP with the vent liner. I opted for a Phillips head SS screw for the insert, thinking the star slot pattern might possibly disperse the fire from the primer more broadly, hopefully helping with a more consistent ignition. Here's to the best time of the season almost upon us!

Oh, I'll be starting with 66 gr by weight, by my calculations should be close to the same as a 95 gr X volume load of pyrodex, and a 260 gr lead conical and black sabot. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Meh, several shots to get up close to zero, but I did start at 50 yds. First shot wasn't even on paper, and I did eyeball boresight it. Anyway, flawless ignition with BH 209 and the modified BP. I ran out of loads I had worked up, and also had other pressing matters to attend to, but I'll go back and fine tune later . I think I'll be good tho.

did you have to buy a new breech plug to shoot powder over pellet? and if so what and how much?

I modified my existing standard BP to accommodate BH 209, by machining it out and installing a vent liner, that I also machined. :) There's a thread buried several pages deep about the process, of maybe GMB54 would be kind enough to repost it .

The OEM plug is not reliable with Blackhorn209 but it will work with anything else.

Just go to Lehigh Defense and get the good plug for $26 and be done with it.

Gmb54, is there anything else that I would need? Is it already set up for a 209 primer? Sorry if all these are dumb question.

The regular Wolf is setup for 209s. The North West Editions of CVA rifles are setup for percussion to comply with PNW open ignition regulations.

Get a CVA Wolf or Optima V2 in stainless. The Optima is worth the extra $40-50 bucks. You will have right around $300 in the Optima and Lehigh plug. Its a better 209 plug than any currently offered.

The only other thing you need is a way to measure loose powder. In the long run pellets cost more anyway so a measure pays for itself rather quickly. Check Walmart for the Blackhorn 209. Bass Pro and Cabelas want a fortune for it.

BTW when you go to get primers get regular shotshell reloading primers. NOT 209 MUZZLELOADING PRIMERS. They cost less and have a hotter "spark" then ML 209s. Usually a regular Win209 fits Lehigh plugs the best. Any good gun shop with reloading supplies should have them or Federal 209A primers. Those are the hottest primer.

Just got done talking to a guy who got the new Lehigh CVA plug. He said the Fed209A primers worked great in his. Those are the hottest 209 primers but they also leave more carbon in the flash channel. Make sure to clean out that carbon around every 15 shots just to be safe.

When you get the new plug see what drill bit easily fits the flash channel. Should be a 1/8 or 5/32. A hex head bit in a nut driver handle works great and only takes a couple seconds to do.

OEM breach plug takes a 3mm
CVA and Western BH209 plugs take a 1/8"
Lehighs plugs for other rifles are 5/32" so im not totally sure if its the same for the new CVA plugs.
