Who still uses one. I'm sitting in a blind not seeing any deer n thought I would make a post. Love mine, got it at Wally World on Clarence for $125 some years ago. Like it more than my old CVA Optima Pro with hex head breach plug. Shoot 80 gr Blackhorn with a 250 gr Barnes Bullet in a Orange Sabot TiminTn reccomended. Did drill out the flash hole just a little for better powder ignition. Well I guess it's time to go, watching a Bob Cat. Wonder how it would taste smoked hard with Hickory?

The Kodiak is a fine gun...CVAs version of the TC Omega.

I kilt my 10 pt Sat with my CVA Kod Mag. Not having the same stellar results with BH209 tho, as I haven't modified the BP. Will be going back to Pyro when I get a chance. Meanwhile, I'm back with my American Knight.

"Hangfire209" is crap with an old school breech plug in a Kodiak/Optima(old stlye) for sure, the breech plug is designed for pellets which sucks but will also ignite 777 or pyrodex powder every time in every temp with a win 209 primer without an issue.
Some dude named ron( I got his email address) makes modified ones for like 25-30 dolllars, drills the face of the plug somewhat back and taps and threads in a savage smokeless vent liner.
Makes a recessed combustion chamber for "hangfire209" like it is supposed to have. I thought about getting a couple made up, but frigg that.
I am tired of using CCI 209 magnum primers and 70 grs weighed out of "Hangfire209" and not knowing if the load is gonna go boom like it should or chik-boom with a half second delay or just the friggin primer goes pop.
And I have done the flash hole mod it is .034, clean it with a drill bit, I am pretty darn anal when it comes to cleaning my guns.
I am starting over with 100 grains by volume 777 3f, a win 209 primer and a Barnes 195gr mz expander in my .45 pro mag and got some Hornady 200 gr. SST rounds to see what they do also.
777 worked everytime before I ever used it and killed deer just as dead.
Butches Black Powder Bore Shine makes short work of the "dredded crud ring".
Do your self a favor Mup and get uncaught from the hype of "hangfire209" go back to what works in your gun.
I know I am for sure.

I plan on doing just that win. It's great that it works for others, in other ML's, but it just doesn't function properly in my cva kod mag, and there's nothing whatsoever wrong with the ML either, just doesn't work with bh. I also will be going back to what works for this ML, bc there is no reason to buy another one just to suit a different powder. Pyro, and the really clean burning Kleanbore primers will be my combo of choice. Oh, and another thing I found, was that those mag primers are SUPER corrosive too. Left my ML alone after shooting that buck for a couple weeks before cleaning(and had cleaned it prior to hunting btw), and when I took it down to clean, the BP, SS mind you, was pitted already! No problem for me, I tried it, it doesn't work for me, so I can change back to what I know works perfectly for my gun. ;)

Btw, I had a hangfire on the first shot at that 10 pt also, and missed, but was fortunately able to shakily get reloaded and, thank the Lord, get another shot, which fired correctly the 2nd time. I have thought about getting a can of pyrodex rs select also in addition to 7773f to see if the gun likes that better.
Different powders, sabots,primers, bullet stlyes, and weights, gonna play around with it this spring.
I jumped on the "hangfire209"bandwagon with this gun at 1st and definitely want to get off it now that the season is done.

Interesting some of u have or had trouble with Blackhorn 209 in your Kodiak. Have a Winchester Apex version of it in .45 never a problem.

Its not the powder....its the design of the plug..
