cutting back trees....?

Was reading on a nursery site last night,and they reccomended cutting/pruning back trees up to 2/3s of their size.Seem right?Seems sort of radical.Any thoughts,I assume this should be done after the first of the year,but well before green up.Does this go for fruit trees as well as saw tooths?

Stveven said he would not prune back fruit trees that were young,or not heavy producers yet.Unless they had low growing,or weird growing branches.He said pruning back Sawtooths was not neccessary.Pretty much it.

Sorry about that Richard, I responded to a PM before I saw the post in here and I was on my crazy low connection at Camp Shelby. Im home now for just a few days on leave though so can get on here alot better. Actually got 8 Allegheny Chinkapins planted this evening and learned that you can acutally get a Chickasaw Plum cutting to root if you keep it very moist I had planted some plums about a month ago and stuck a small limb that I had pruned off into a wet spot in one of my fields, I pulled it up today and it had little roots on it! Just absolutelty made my day, I know many dont understand that but Im weird about trees lol
