Cutting a Barrel

Anyone have any idea roughly what it would cost to have a shotgun barrel cut down and then rethreaded to accept the same chokes?

Not so sure things will go as intended. The barrel constricts the shot charge, called the forcing cone. Need to see a very good gunsmith. How much you plan on cutting off?

I'd prefer around 4 inches. I was under the impression that the gunsmith could re-lengthen the forcing cone after cutting, because I know some people have their forcing cones lengthened for whatever reason. However, I know absolutely nothing about this whole process. Just know I'd like my barrel to be considerably shorter.

The forcing cone is the first part of the barrel (next to the chamber), so cutting the end of the barrel off will not affect it. Most non-competition shotguns have pretty short forcing cones (less than couple of inches), so lengthening and polishing them does generally help at least a little bit with the shot pattern.

I don't know what kind of shotgun you have, but keep in mind that aftermarket barrels can be had for Mossberg and Remington pumps for relatively cheap.
