Current world record 600 yd. group.

I met the man who shot the world record 600 yd. group at the local range the other day. His name is John Lewis and he shot a .386" 5 shot group at 600 yds. He was shooting the rifle he set the record with and he said it was a home built rifle.

there are a few better calibers balistically,,but in the right hands a 308 is hard to beat

NightForce scope 8-32 power I think.

this was on the bench rest forum a while back. they were saying that it was a homebrew action.(they described it as a hunk of metal if i remember) and the barrel had been reamed some 20 years earlier, and he broke the record at oak ridge!!! is this the same guy?

Was wondering the same when I read this. I can't recall the guys name or the the range but there was one set out there recentaly.He was using and old barrel he had took off the action and had put back on or something like that.

Seems like Whelen Man or Tim was over there when it was set.

I just remember it being talked here and reading about it in the club newsletter.

Yes this is the same guy. He told me he had give 50.00 dollars for the barrel. He said the scope was the most expensive part of the gun.

I don't think that record will fall for a lot of years. There was skill, patience, and most of all a lot of luck going for John that day. It was windy with on and off rain but things just came together for him. I think that one will stand for a few decades or more. Sorry, no offense Tim, I'd love to see you do it but don't think this one is in the future. This one eclipsed the old record by a wide margin.

It is, if I am not mistaken he said he bought the wood at Home Depot. He said some of the guys with the 5 to 6 hundred dollar paint jobs on their stocks hate it. He said it may look like a piece of junk but it sure shoots good.
