Creek Chubs

Just got off work and going out to a tiny little spring fed creek, size of a ditch, that I set a trap in this afternoon before work. The creek is dominated by creek chubs, bluegill, and banded sculpins. Also has a few mottled sculpins and other minnows.

Anyway, details aside, who has used creek chubs as live bait? They can be fun to catch on hook and line but I am just trapping/catching some for fun tonight so I can put fish in the new bait tank I just made. I will also get stonerollers and shiners for the tank but this little creek is loaded with the chubs. Part of me wants to get my micro fishing rod and a #14 hook with pieces of worm and dangle them down into the water... if I had some worms...

So are chubs a good live bait compared to shiners or stonerollers?

It's been my experience that Chubs will catch everything that swims that is good to eat. It's been years since I've used them, but back in the day, they were the difference between catching fish or not.

Just got a few dozen of them plus a few green sunfish, stonerollers and sculpins. Most of the fish were caught with a dip net though... one on rod and reel, and all the green sunfish were caught in the minnow trap. Need a different bait I guess lol

I use chubs quite a bit and they make a good live bait. Never had problems trapping them with plain ol cat food in the trap.

Back home in Indiana they were our go-to bait for flatheads. Spent many an afternoon walking the shallow creeks with a seine net to go catfishin that night. Wish I knew where to find them around my place down here
