I absolutely love manipulating the landscape. This particular piece sits on an oak flat between a large clover plot and a bedding area. This summer, I was able to get a dozer in this area to help create this funnel.

I had two goals in mind: 1) crush undesirable trees to allow sunlight to hit the ground; and 2) design it in such a way that it would funnel deer right by my stand. I was able to accomplish both in a short amount of time.

As you can see, the crushed brush funnels several different deer trails down to one trail. My tree stand sits in a large white oak just 22 yards away.

One of the clusters of trees had deep roots and created a small hole in the ground when pushed over. After making the hole a little bit deeper with the dozer, I was able to create a nice drinking hole.

I also created a halo of downed trees around my tree stand so deer would not get downwind of me or cut my trail to the stand. This "fence" of trees also prohibits deer from seeing me as I enter my stand.

The red dot is where I have a trophy rock. All things considered, this makes a killer set up for intercepting deer as they travel to and from the food plot.

On top of providing browse for the deer, crushing brush also creates great cover for small game and turkey nests.

If you don't have access to a dozer, a shovel and chainsaw can create the same result- just with a lot more work involved!

Here is an aerial pic of the area. The yellow dots are known beds and the pink is the trails they use. The light blue is the area I crushed with the small blue dot being the water hole.

The red X is my stand and the red dots are my entry/exit route.
