Went last night after work. There are some good nightcrawlers along a trail down by the river, so I made a quick red filter for my flashlight. Either it was not red enough, or worms are more sensitive to red light than I thought. Looking at the edge of the beam is tough... your eye naturally wants to look where it's brightest.

Anyway, out of about 7 or 8 worms that I caught, I probably saw at least 40. They are not easy to catch. But the biggest were up around 6 inches long.

I want to go out again and see if I can work on the worm catching skill. Even when I did manage to pinch a few, they would slip out of my fingers instantly. So I didn't bring a lot home but it was a fun way to enjoy the perfect weather outside.

I did but with all the roots and stuff in the dirt, and how fast the worms move, by the time they got back into the hole, the shovel was useless.

But I went again last night with more success. I dimmed down the filter on the flashlight a bit and managed to pinch more than 20 worms in a 2 hour period. That's not a bad number considering how hard they are to catch down by the river.
 
Used to catch nightcrawlers when I was growing up. With the old flashlights, there was a dim edge on it, hit em with the brighter part and they were gone.

Mow the lawn, water, and then go out after dark. Was pretty easy to catch a couple of dozen in 30 minutes or so. Fun part was not breaking them as you eased them out of the hole.
