OK so Ive learned that I cant trap yotes the way I have been doing it.My farm is infested with coyotes and I want to eradicate them.What are my best options?This morning I was threatened my the neighboring farm owner that If one of his dogs got caught in one of my traps we would have serious problems and someone would get hurt. SCN says I can use rubber jawed traps and its ok.What would you guys do?
 
I'd have told him to keep his dogs on his property or yes we would have trouble. As far as trapping the rubber ones are effective but will also break bones ligaments etc
 
Its your right to protect your property and it is his responsibility to keep his dogs on his property. At least that is my understanding of the "law" on the matter. I would let him know I am trapping and if needed send him a certified letter letting him know you are legally trapping coyotes on your property so he should keep his dogs restrained to his property for their safety.

At least thats what I would do.
 
Your property......do as you wish ! His dogs shouldn't be on YOUR property. If he doesn't have enough respect for his animals to keep them on HIS place then HE should suffer the consequences.

Been there done that, neighbors dogs kept killing my livestock. I took care of the problem and of course the sheriff showed up at my door. We chatted and he pretty much patted me on the back !! Said he would have done the same thing that he was just obligated to talk with me about the subject. Said if I ever had any retribution from the dog owners to give him a call and he would handle it promptly.

I wish I could get this kinda response about trespassers !!

I would continue to trap and i would also talk to the police about a dog at large and the threats he made. Its an entitlement mentality that alot of dog owners have that causes all these problems. If they would care for their animals and obey the law, none of these problems would come up. I would not talk to this man anymore about the subject, he's clearly an idiot.

Yeah he needs to obey the law, quit making threats and leave you alone about it. He needs to understand that. I would make SURE he is talked to by some form of law enforcement before things escalate.
 
Dang right, that's what id do. If they are calling the law on you for trapping, making threats, etc and you not doing anything wrong, yeah i would. I would call them ahead of time for advice, but yeah i would go that route. I would talk to the TWRA guy about that as well. If you don't own the land that might not be good for your relationship with the landowner, something to consider as well.
 
Based on your other posts, you were not setting legal traps (regardless of how silly the law is)...catching dogs and calling around trying to figure out who they belong to....why wouldn't you just let it loose and not make a big scene? For the sake of all legit trappers, figure out what you are doing before putting traps in the ground.

I imagine if the officer wants to "meet" you, it's probably to give you a ticket.

The statute on trapping states that the trapper is liable for any damages done to domestic animals.

Respectfully SCN, I don't think anything in his post is put in issue by your reference to "liability." Furthermore, what "damage" could reasonably done to a dog by a TN legal trap? I would really like to see how that law holds up in court with regard to a trespassing dog. Finally, given the damage done by coyotes, and the widespread nuisance of stray dogs, I would like to know why TN persists in being so unfriendly to trappers. I understand that your job is enforcement rather than policy, but Tennesseans need to take this up and develop regulations that are easily understood by the average reader, and do not cause an impediment to common sense varmint control.
 
I love dogs,have never had intention of harming a neighbors dog and will pay the vet bill if my attny advises and I am presented with it.This is not a financial issue for me.It is an issue of whether I can trap nuisance coyotes off of my very expensive hunting property.(where recently 3 coyotes came down the hill and 3 deer ran in the other direction from where they were headed)The statewide leash law is also in effect and hopefully enforced.I am only trying to do some predator management and have some fun.After being threatened bodily harm by my bully neighbor,it kinda takes some of the fun out of it.Furthermore,when the old man dies whose dog I caught,I will try to buy his land and bulldoze his house down. :)

Another good reason to call animal control/police for loose dogs.
