Coyote Trapping Question

For all of you that trap coyotes, do you add extension chain to your traps to keep them from pulling out or does it really make any difference?

Personally, I don't want anything that can give them the advantage to getting loose.. the longer the chain.. the more " of a run" they can get to jerk their foot out..

I put 18"wolf fangs on chain. I prefer a short chain. Mainly because it's easier to deal with it in a trap bed.I don't use shock springs. Keep it simple.

Through the years the thinking has changed from short chains so they can't get momentum built up to longer chains, so the aren't pumping your anchor point straight up. Personally I use Berkshires and about 18" of cable, never had a problem. When pulling sets I take a pair of C7 cable cutters and snip the cable below ground level, I don't pull stakes out due to all the solid/rocky ground I trap. I do use shock springs and 4 swivels in the trap chain, 3 links between swivels, shock spring in the middle, last swivel attached to cable. The over kill is for non target catches, the domesticated kind. With drags it's all chain and usually wrapped around a sapling/small tree…..chain lays flat. Hope this helps.

I reuse my anchors so I don't care for berkshires or cables but that's what I started with. In my experience the dogs don't fight a heavy trap as hard.I haven't added any extra swivels. justget started and find what you like. I'm in the mud, no rocks here lol.

Thanks for all of the replies. I have 18" cables and ground anchors on mine now but I've really never targeted coyote but have caught plenty of fox and bobcats and the occasional domesticated animal but this area to be trapped is over a mile from the closest house with animals, so I hope that won't be an issue. This year it seems I have a coyote problem and I have found a coyote highway intersection after I moved some cameras around and will be targeting them in the very near future.

Get a catch pole or wear a heavy jacket.catch pole is good insurance.
