Coyote killin?

Multiple questions: Is an electronic call a necessity for a beginner? Is it that much more advantageous over a another method?; next series Setup: Is a pop-up blind effective? Do u setup on the edge of fields or inside in the woodline? Elevated position?; Best time to hunt? scent control?and how long u sit? ok too many but an answer on any is appreciated.

Mouth call are very effective as well.....

blind might allow you to get away with more movements....

edge of field or woodline are both good places...

in Tennessee, hunt year around if you like.... scent control is a big thing... always set up to face downwind as most predators will circle downwind of the sound to catch the scent.... shoot it before it gets your scent and tries to get out of there.

Typical set-ups are 30 min.... or less.

"Is an electronic call a necessity for a beginner" Absolutely not, I think most folks try hand calling and because they don't kill a coyote right away, they think it's their calling... I hunted a year before killing my 1st. Calling isn't nearly as difficult as most would believe. Do a few search's on youtube and you'll get some great tips. I've been meaning to put a little video together for my home page, but haven't done it yet. I actually think the electronic caller is a disadvantage... most folks slip up to a field edge... instead of sitting down and calling they walk out into the field to place their e-caller down. I can't help but wonder how many coyote's see them, and don't respond.

"Is a pop-up blind effective"... I actually think that would hurt your chances.. the noise of setting up as well as something extra to carry. One of the most important things IMO, is to be quiet... my wife's dogs hear her driving down the road when she's coming home.. I have the tv running and we live on a paved street! Just be very quiet, and sit very still... when you see a coyote coming in to your call just be still... they are the peak of paranoia... they will stop and look around... then you can move your gun to shoot.

woodline... yes, but I also hunt the woods.

Elevated position? When possible but no matter what make sure you have good visibility... so you know that you will see them before they see you. You are at a disadvantage, you've been calling and they are looking in your direction. You have to set up so you have a good field of view.

Best time to hunt? Hard to say, they're always out there. I've called them in early morning, afternoon, and evening. You have to remember they're on the move early morning, so they're more likely to see you... in the afternoon they're bedded down.. you won't wake them so easily until you're calling.

scent control? I personally think it's a waste of time and effort. Years ago I would shower in scent free soap, wash my hunting cloths in scent free laundry, and keep them out side in a "closet" I built for my hunting stuff... I had a pair come in and I saw their noses go up in the air, and about turn their selves inside out getting out of there when they scented me... they were about 130 yards away! (down wind) IMO you just have to "play the wind" be careful where you sit and don't call if they will be coming to the call from down wind. Remember domestic drug dogs can smell drugs in plastic bags, inside gas tanks... we aren't going to hide our scent from them, no way.

how long u sit? Normally 15-20 mins..

Thanks for the responses. Why such short sits? Do u call do a short sit then reposition? Do u recommend decoys?

From my experience if a coyote is going to respond they get there very fast. I know some folks stay up to 45 mins, but I believe the 20 mins to be more effective.

I've used decoy's and seen coyote's come running to them, and also see them and turn around and run. Using decoy's you run into the same situation I was talking about with the e-callers... how many coyote's will see you walking out to set it up?
