Coyote female challenge call - when?

I saved my most likely set for last this afternoon. Perfect wind, good visibility, but no go with any food calls.
I then hit femal howl and got an immediate response from several about 800yds away. We went back a forth a couple of times and I decided to try a short femal challenge call to see if one would be ticked off enough to come in closer.
It went dead silent after that call.

When should a female challenge call be used?

I throw it in my calling sequence this time of year. I mostly use it for an attention getter. Once I get there attention I'll throw food calls or pup distress at them. I can honestly say that I have never "called one in" using just a female challenge
