This year I bought 63 acres,More or less a long rectangle.Ive noticed that the first 12 acres or so is mostly Poplars ,cherry and maples.Nothing much for deer,and very open.So,Im thinking of having it cut.Are there any programs for this?Would loggers be interested in this?Any in put would be appreciated.I figure I could re plant pines,oaks etc,but It sure would add cover and lots of browse is my thought.
 
I'm not sure what the lumber market is looking like at the moment.

How does the land lay?, as in does it create a funnel or is it mostly flat? You could use the front part of the property for your shooting house/ladder stand.
 
ahh ok just trying to think of all possiblites.


I'd chop all that stuff up and put in some wild cedars. But I would make one area just full of oaks.. It would be a hot spot once the trees start to finally produce.
 
Loggers would be happy to cut the poplars and the cherries, too. Sounds like a good spot to let a thicket form and use for a mini-sanctuary.

My thoughts as well,kind of hate to "ugly it up ",but IM sure it will look better to the deer.
 
If your main objective with the property is deer hunting then I would say cut it. You might want to get it done befor next summer to get the most re-growth next year befor the season.

There is a big difference between people woods and deer woods. Deer don't live in people woods.

In their book Grow 'Em Right, Neil and Craig Dougherty describe people woods as a place you would want to have a picnic, and deer woods as a tangled mess that you would be embarrassed to show people.
 
pesonally... I would clear cut it all...

Throw in large "rows" of white oaks and put food plots in between them.

That way you have large clumps of oaks with food, then winter you have the food plots.

Then during the summer around the oaks and whatever other trees you decide to not cut... throw down a but ton of rasberries and honeysuckle...

MMMM MMMM GOOD!
