Something else about this Model 1950 Target/Model 24 .44 Special is this run is the 3rd Generation model. First generations were made from 1950 to 1966 and dropped. Only 5,050 were made in those 16 years, making it far less than one of Smith & Wesson's stellar sellers. In 1983 the Model 24-3 were once again introduced. Standard barrel lengths were 4" and 6-1/2", and big distributor Lew Horton bought an exclusive special run of 3"-barreled Model 24-3s. According to the book Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson by Supica & Nahas about 12,500 of the "2nd Generation" Model 24-3s of all barrel lengths were produced in 1983/1984.
