Whens everyone getting their seed in the ground, Im shooting for the the middle to end of may. Also im leaning towards a rr type of corn, How did some of your plots fair with that seed.. Pros and cons?

Do you plan on spraying glyphosate? If you don't, go with conventional corn and save some money.

Mid may here also. Yep round up ready works great. Had very good success last year.

Yea i plan on spraying the field first, the letting it sit for a couple of weeks to see what greens up.. If needed I will re-spray. Im goin to plant it with a no till drill. Its about 1.5 acres, Im thinking im going to need around 12-15 pounds of of seed to plant that field..

Are you planting a corn/bean mix or seperately? That rate is about right for 1 acre of pure corn.

Thats all I have access to, A local farmer is planting that field for me.

Yes it will. No till is the way to go if you have access to a drill. It also cuts down on erosion. At least thats what I,ve been hearing!

the only basic problem with drilling corn is getting seed population per acre low enough, newer style drills might be able to do this

A drill will plant in rows yes! However the rolls itself will be extremely close to one another. So close in fact that the stand want be very tall and if it has any ears of corn what so ever they want amount to much. A wheat field is planted using a drill and you can tell just by driving by how many plants are in one area, imagine corn being that close together. Even if my opinion is wrong and you get 7 to 8 foot stalks you want be able to see thru it, much less walk thru it. But in this guys case its the only thing he has access too.

You use a different type of drill, or use different settings for corn than you would wheat. I plant corn with a no-till and it does great.

Just call me hard headed or old fashioned. I'm kinda thinking bout the average guy here wanting to plant corn with a drill. I know if I picked up the phone or knocked on a farmers door asking if he could use his drill to plant corn for me I'd either get laughed at or asked if I'm on drugs. But maybe thats just my area of TN. I'm not sure! Either way most farmers want bother starting their tractors much less resetting their drill just to make a neighbor happy.

My experience in two years has been money up a hogs butt using a drill. Yes you can change settings but they are not designed to plant ag. crops. I found a four row corn planter for cheap and it will do the job right. I used to have a two row and sold it, bad move, but it was planting the corn, beans, and milo like I wanted it to. Absolutely no comparison from my experience. You know what the say about opinions thats just my hairy one.
