Most bags contain approximately an 80,000 seed count. With that being said for ag purposes I tend to plant 28,000-30,000 per acre. For a food plot you can get by with less. Unless you can find some cheap nwtf seed or carryover seed somewhere I would make 1 bag plant what you are wanting. Hope this helps
 
Tickweed has been involved a few years with NWTF RR seed corn and beans for drastically reduced prices compared to new agricultural seed. Expect something like $20 to $25 for 50lbs of RR corn. I bought 5 bags several years ago with good results.

Further back in the past, I had bought Truckers Favorite variety seed corn for $55/bag at a local feed store. It's not RR though so you get more weeds. But then weeds are not nearly as bad as some food plotters make them out to be. In fact when deer managers talk about deer eating "tubers & forbs" they are really talking about what us commoners call "weeds". A few fertilized and limed weeds mixed in a plot is ok as long as it's not something really aggressive like pig weed or Canadian thistle. Those ARE bad news.

Last year it was 35 a bag...you have to join Jackson NWTF chapter. Ticketed can give you more info. There banquet if the 11th

It will not do you any good this year but a $35 membership in Quail Forever will give you access to corn, soybeans,and grain sorghum for $11 per bag. We have as many or more duck hunters buying corn through us than we have folks planting for quail. It's the best deal out there. Several WMA's get seed through QF.
 
The reason I say that it won't do any good this year is that the orders for the seed are sent in like Sept or Oct. And then the seed is shipped out to the chapters right about now till early April. No bulk deliveries with lots of extra seed it is all individual orders paid in advance.
 
I didn't realize there was another organization selling seed this way either. I may join Quail Forever myself. Besides the cheap seeds, I'd love to hear that old familiar "bob white" call again someday.

That all depends on the nature of your field - I would have been fine with just weeds coming up in my corn that I planted, but instead of just weeds I ended up having an overabundance of grasses that came up. Out of about a five acre corn field I only ended up with 3/4 acre putting on any ears due to the grasses choking out the corn so bad. Unfortunately with this, the deer had the ears stripped off of the stalks that did produce well before I even had a chance to hunt over it. I'll never go without using some sort of post-emergent herbicide again.
 
You are right that it depends on the amount of weeds as well as the type, which i referred to above. Grass is another curse we have to deal with. I have one particular area in my favorite plot location that must be saturated with grass seeds enough to grow grass for the next 100 years. No matter how well i kill it, grass is right back in there the next Spring. I've got to get on that grass soon or it will choke out the new stand of Imperial Whitetail clover I planted last Fall.

To get seed from qf where would the pickup be. I'm interested in getting some this season. Even the nwtf seed was a drive to pick it up I was really wanting to this season.
 
NWTF in North-Central Alabama (Addison) has corn seed in now. It is $40 per bag. I realize that is a drive for most of you but wanted to put it out there.
 
When you join Quail Forever you will be connected with the closest chapter to your address. Each chapter has a person that gathers the requests for seed from the chapter members usually in September and then helps with the distribution come the following spring, say April (normally). Much of our seed was late this year and wasn't recieved until on up in May. As of right now all orders requested have been being filled. Several WMA's have been taking advantage of the seed program, this helps them to stretch their funds further getting more food in the ground for less money. A good organization where the only funds that go to the national office comes from the memberships and the chapters get to keep all the other funds they raise for programs, habitat work, and so on.
 
One of my friends buys the deer corn from Walmart and plants it for his food plots.. it's not like you are trying to make a farm payment on the harvest..

Very good point. Sometimes I think we get a little too serious with our food plots. After all we are just planting for varmints. As you say, we aren't trying to live on the crop.

Of course it will...I'm going to venture its round up ready also.. I had a bunch come up in my field one year and tried to kill it with round up and nothing.. nada.. had to buy some liberty and spray on it to kill it..

Now TAHT is interesting for sure. I'd never have guessed it to be RR. Wouldn't be much trouble to test that though before spraying the entire plot. Even if it's not RR, if you broadcast it fairly thick, the corn will shade out most weeds and grass soon. Most of the corn I've used in food plots has been Trucker's Favorite seed corn which isn't RR and it worked well.
 
The rr traits are in the kernels.. when we buy seed corn we have to sign our life away swearing we won't sell or save any for seed... the contract is several pages long...
