It is ABSOLUTELY fine!
In fact, I was using copper-plated shot on turkeys in old shotguns long before steel shot and "turkey" chokes came into the picture.
But if you're about to buy some new turkey shells, take a look at the nickel-plated Fiocci shells --- supposed to be better than copper-plated, and cheaper, too.

i used to use them in my 870 with good results. used 3" #4's with the remington factory turkey choke. the turkeys didnt like that none.
its the only thing i have used for a very long time. 6 bucks a box.
