Food Plots Coop seed

I am wanting to graduate from bagged seed to coop seed and making my own mixes. I know basically what I want but don't know specifics.

What white clover do I ask for?
What turnips do I want? I am wanting to put them in a old logging landing and use them to help break up the soil.
How about suggestions on oats?

I would use Durana or Ladino clover if i was putting in a white clover. As for the turnips for the logging road, I would use a Daikon radish to help with soil break up. As for the oats I don't think there is a big difference in regular forage oats and the buck forage oats. I also put cereal rye ( NOT RYEGRASS) in my plots.

Your dead on feathersandfur . I have tried a lot of different mixes and found out oats are oats, radishes are better than turnips, and the co-op seed is as good or better than the buck in a bag seed. Only one thing lime and lime or use a lot of arrow leaf clover it can handle the ph being off better than red or white clover.

Guess I will have to disagree on the oats. We have used buck forage oats, regular oats, and plot spike oats. The basic difference I have seen is that the buck forage oats will resist cold weather better and stay greener longer. This is planted in southern Tn.

I plant reg oats in my plots and they stay green until spring and if you do some research you will find that oats are oats and I am in east tn. We as hunters have to get away from these high priced buck in a bag seed company's lies. Its your money spend it how you want too .

Durana is a great white clover, if you want a long lived perennial stand, but your coop won't have it. You can order it online and it's worth the extra.

I've never tried mixing my own seeds because I figured you'd have to buy too large a quantity of each type seed since the CO-OP is set up for real farmers. I would think they'd have 50lb bags of each individual plant seeds and if you wanted a mixed plot with say 5 different plants, that'd mean you'd end up with 250 lbs of seed. That's way too much for most people including myself! Is this not the case? How much do you have to buy of each seed when mixing your own?

At my local co op you can buy however many lbs of each kind of seed you want. You don't have to buy the whole 50 lb bag if you just need 5 lb of it. I was at bass pro saturday and saw a 30 lb bag of winter mix blend for $34.99. It had wheat, oats and turnips in it. At the co op for $35 I could buy prolly 150 lb of that combination. Maybe that will help.

Ladino on the clover and I have planted coop Oats for years with great success and another thing winter wheat works just as well as Oats at about half the cost.....I mix with Austrian winter peas..... can't keep em out!
