I'm a recent convert into the smokeless world and impatient. I've heard some discussion about a cooling rod to speed up the shooting cycles. Where can you get one or how do you make one. How do they work etc.?

If you have a 50 cal, just go to home depot and buy a 1/2" aluminum rod in the hardware department. Be sure to roll it on the floor or a counter top to make sure it is straight before purchasing it.

Do you need to have it soaking in ice water before you insert it and how long does it need to stay in? Boy this is sounding bad isn't it?

The least expensive way is to put a bag of Ice in a cooler standing up. Insert the rod into the bag of ice. After you shoot, remove the rod from ice and wipe off the moisture. Insert the rod into the barrel for a minute or so until The rod and barrel settle at a common temp.
Heat is attracted to cold so the cold rod will absorb the heat and become the same temp as the cooled barrel.

Thanks SCAT, that helps.
