Hello all, I have a cabelas hawken style 50cal flint lock. I'm thinking about upgrading the triggers and fritzen or the entire lock to make it more user friendly. I originally got this rifle to hunt in PA and i like it but it is not the most reliable MZ i have ever shot.
With that said i contemplated switching to percussion cap. Has anyone switched from rock to cap? Any opinions would be appreciated.
I'm not in the market for a new rifle at this time.

Do you know for a fact that it is even possible to do that? I've never heard of doing that, but that doesn't mean anything.
 
I can't recall who makes the Cabela's Hawken but that's where I'd start...by seeing if you can order the drum and percussion lock for that particular model. I know that idea would work with my little .40 caliber flintlock if I were so inclined to do so.
 
no you cant do that with the cabelas hawken.

i have a barrel for one 50cal perc but its pitted up pretty good in the bore.
 
I'm away from home right now but if i remember right Cabelas rifles are made in Italy and track of the wolf or Dixie makes parts for them.

I want to take it to Dixie and see if i can install a drum (threaded touch-hole) and get a cap lock to meet up right. I was hoping that some one else blazed the trail for me. Oh-well it was worth a shot.

Rock locks intrigue me so i guess i'll tune it up and be fine.

There are lots of used TC Hawken rifles for sale. Our local pawn shops have several of them. Most black powder shooters have moved to the in-lines and the side locks are setting around gathering dust. I can see why you would want to keep an old favorite. I haven't gone to the in-lines and still shoot the percussion rifle I bought 30 years ago.
