Article in the commercial appeal 'Paradise in Peril" about the growing deer population in Shelby Farms and one possible solution is controlled hunting. Wouldn't it be great if that could be accomplished? It's a win win for the deer, hunter and even the hungry. It's the best low cost solution that probably won't happen cause makes too much sense!
 
I'm in if it happens but I think the idiots and bleeding heart environmentalists around that area won't allow a hunt

I agree with Poser - the "problem" is that most of the park is open to access with walking trails and such, so keeping the runners/bikers/dog walkers away poses lots of logistical issues. They could open a hunt along the bottoms to the south and west, but that would only cover a fraction of the park. All it would take is one picture of an unrecovered deer with an arrow sticking out posted by an anti on the internet to shut that hunt down.

Sadly, since the park closes at dark, the only feasible control method is shooting them at night with suppressed guns.

Perhaps they could "close" the park for one day for this hunt. Or maybe close it for a few hours the first few hours of the morning or the last couple hours of the afternoon/evening. There's no way they could have a hunt during regular hours, with the amount of walkers/runners/people that go to the park.
 
Any place that has deer should figure out how to have a managed draw hunt annually. Close it except for the hunters 3 days every year and figure out how many deer need to be culled for the health of the herd.

Thousands of other places across the country do it. Haap, the park in Chattanooga, holston defense, oak ridge, ft campbell, lbl, etc etc. just because a bunch of libs will protest it should not stop proven science from prevailing.
 
I don't see it happening. Its not as big as some of the other parks mentioned, its in the center of the county, and gets a lot of recreational use, not to mention the libs and anti's would fight it tooth and nail.
 
Logistically it would be tough. The park itself is closed every night with locked gates, the small parking pads on the back side have gates, the bike access on Walnut Grove has a gate and the dog park has a gate. It's the surrounding land that is easily accessed. So closing it down for a hunt inside the park isn't that far fetched. I think a late season December hunt during the week would have minimal impact on park users just given how many people use it that time of year. It would probably also have minimal impact on the deer population also. I think the backlash from libs and anti's is a little over estimated, hell I know plenty of democrats that would take free venison, I get asked all the time.
 
Has anyone heard any updates on this?

I found a article dated Dec 2013 recommendeding sharp shooting over bait at night. I sure hope that is now the route they choose or chose.
