Concerned about deer health........

We have killed two deer that have had what appeared to either be tumors or something on their backs/necks that have had some type of infection. There was a green pus that was in them and had a TERRIBLE odor. These were not injuries from hunters and both deer were visibly "healthy". We chose not to eat them,just wasn't sure if they were safe or not.

Any thoughts or info appreciated.

Sounds like abscesses. Any animal can get them from even minor injuries.

As long as they are surface abscesses (associated with skin punctures), eating them should be fine.

Ruger is pretty good about making sure they don't run off.

I just couldn't bring myself to eat the deer after smelling that odor from that pus!

I've seen this before, which is why I recognize what you're dealing with here.

Those deer have been hit with a tire tool, but still managed to escape and survive their injuries.
