As I get older, I'm taking a serious look at picking up a compact rifle in 7mm-08 or 308. I guess it's the ease of carry, lighter weight, less recoil that weighs in my decision. Any recommendations for current compact rifles? Bergara Compact? Tikka Compact, Ruger Compact?

Tikka , short, light and most importantly accurate. But your criteria of lighter weight and less recoil work against each other

Less recoil is the least of the issues. I currently shoot a 35 Whelen in a REM Model 7600, so I really didn't think that statement through! Probably should've left that out. lol.

I like the model 7 as mentioned, but they are hard to find. The new Ruger American 2 has a removable spacer or the original has a compact. I would look at either.

I have the Ruger American compact rifles in 7mm-08, 308 and 223. Just my 2 cents is they handle and shoot very well. Way above my ability. Add that they are affordable and they are Rugers. A win win for me.

As always, just my opinion. There are folks here way more knowledgeable on here.

Blessings.

Take a look at the Christensen Arms MPR. Very light, and it's available with a 16 inch barrel in .308. I have a 6.5 CM and it's nice.

Just got a Winchester XPR Compact in 308 Win. My grand & great grand boys have XPR Compacts in 300 wsm. As they outgrow the synthetic short stock, it's replaced with walnut standard lop. Experience has been good, excellent triggers, accuracy and dependability!
But, every man to his own poison!

I've sort of done the same. I bought a Bergara Carbon Ridge in 308 with 20" barrel a couple of years ago and love it. There's several options out there. Bergara just came out with the Stoke that is compact and available in several calibers along with the Ruger American Gen 2 just to name a few.

I have a couple of really compacts....Tikka T3x .223 cut to 18" in a Rokstock (7lb on the nose) & my Überlight AR (3lb 13oz) in 6x45

I'm not really an AR guy, but the more I shot & carry this little thing, the happier I am with it. It's an absolute joy to carry, incredibly low recoil, it'll hit a 6" plate at 500yds 10/10 shots from the bench & has more than enough ass to cleanly take deer (or bigger) at any range if be comfortable shooting one.

Seriously thinking about picking up a Ruger American gen 2 Ranch in 6.5 creedmoor as a compact lightweight rifle. Looks really nice and seems to be a good shooter for an affordable gun.
