clinch river brookies

anybody still catching any? i haven't seen one all year. maybe the stripers and big browns already got most of them.

I have not seen one all year, there is more to their disappearance then stripers or other trout. I personally do not think they are able to hold over very well in the Clinch for some reason. It really doesn't bother me, but they certainly do not make it from year to year and with TWRA's limited budget I am hopeful they aren't even being stocked anymore.

i think this was a one-time deal from one of the neighboring states(va. i think)that had a surplus of fish and nowhere to put them. i really thought they would do better.

Brookies were put in during the drought about 2-3 years ago. Raised up, and then no where to put them in low, warm mountain waters, so they were dumped into the Clinch and several other tailwaters.

I liked them there. I have'nt caught any this spring but my fishing has been limited due to the water release schedule lately. I like to wade and that is tough on 2 generators!

Water quality in the Clinch is obviously good enough if they could make it 2 years or so. I caught one about 14" during the winter months. Maybe everybody found out how good they are to eat, which is OK by me.

Now about the stripers......I thought they ONLY ate shad! (According to TWRA) RIIIIIIGHHT!

I am 99% sure they stocked them 3 years in a row, in fact I am quite positive of that.

It isn't competition for food, lord knows there is enough food in the Clinch to feed an army or trout.

It has more to do with high flows during the winter or any other times during the year IMO. Or it has to do with them not being able to adjust to the diet present in the Clinch.

I could care less, and hope TWRA saves their money, since all I hear is money woes when it comes to trout. If that is the case maybe someone there should think about not wasting 30,000 fish in the Big Pigeon each year. Talk about a poor use of resources.

I heard the state record striper was caught on a trout . A long time ago now over 10 years I think.

I'm catching some Brook trout up there. I caught several in the 16 inch range. I like catching them better than the Rainbows and Browns. They don't spin when you hook one. They jump and fight harder. I'm sure they will soon die out of basically old age and predation because there aren't cold tributary streams for them to spawn. They maybe able to spawn in some pea gravel areas in the main river but that will most likely not happen.
