Climbing sticks

I've only hunted from ladder stands and ground blinds in my limited experience but have caught the fever and went more in the last 6 weeks than I have in the last 6 years. I've got a checklist of items I'd like to get and one of those is a climbing rig so that I can try some new places. I think I've decided to get either a millennium u100 or 150 based on comments in another thread a few weeks ago and the research I've done as well. In terms of climbing sticks, what's the preference of the board?

I'm in the market for a set also. On paper, I like the XOP sticks the best. I have not used them, however. Muddy/Big Game Aerolites are nice as well with the double steps. Cabelas has the Muddy Pro sticks for $125 for a 4 pack of 20" sticks. Best deal I've seen currently.

As far as stands, the m100u is way lighter that the steel stands and Cabelas has it for $145 right now. That's a steal.

I use the regular ol 20' climbing sticks that come in 4' sections. I have a rural king close and that's where i find about the best deals on them. They run about $30. The millenium stand is a good choice. I got 3 at a good discount a few months back. Very easy to hang. I also use the bone collector stands that has the same style seat with arm rest and shooting rail. It is more comfortable than the millenium for half the price.

I have a set of xop sticks, really like how they all lock together for quiet and easy packing

Lot of systems out there I have no experience with. Many times you have to offset them going up because of limbs, etc. so I'd recommend one that you can stagger going up and around the tree.

#1. Ladder stands are good and safe but usually takes two to erect and not every situation is good for a ladder stand. That leads me to #2

#2. There will be situations where a 20 ft continuous ladder stick will not work. 20 ft ladder sticks are sold by many people and I think you can shop the internet right now early Jan and find excellent deals with many no shipping opps.

#3. There are trees that require individual strap on sticks to be able to hunt correctly. I am a bowhunter first and all of my tree stands choices have to do with a bow first.

Get some 20 ft continuous sticks and get some individual strap on sections - I like the Lone Wolf - just not their cost.

Do your Muddy sticks have the ropes or straps? How do you like them?

Do your Muddy sticks have the ropes or straps? How do you like them?

What do you like about the Heliums?

Ropes wouldn't have it any other way

Heliums- weight, double sided steps, price. The pack well and When modded to use the muddy rope they are the shiznit!!

If money isnt a problem the Lone wolf or Muddy sticks are the deal, light and with a single flip step to cover all needs. I have several sets of these along with pretty much every other type along the way and these are hands down the best all around sticks on the market.

I have the Millenium M100U and have stated many times I love this stand. On my primary stand I have a 20ft continuous ladder that I got at Dicks a few years ago for less than $30 on clearance. I have two sets of those. This year I have added a set of Hawk Helium Climbing sticks and I really like them. I had the muddy sticks before and they were really good, they just didn't pack as well as I like. I am planning to mod my Hawk sticks to use the rope instead of the current buckles, but I really like these sticks. I added a fourth stick and made a 20 inch step extension for my bottom step. With the Millenium and the Heliums I can pretty much hunt any tree I want. The Heliums are also quite a bit cheaper than Muddy's or Lone Wolfs.

I'm you will mostly be gun hunting, get a climber. If you will primarily be bow hunting, the sticks/stand combo is the way to go.

Lone Wolf sticks are hard to beat.

I bought and used the XOP setup with the XOP air raid. The platform is great and the XOP sticks are also great who get into those crooked trees over looking a clear cut

Pros: packs great, silent (with added stealth strips), cab climb any tree stickin out of the ground.

Cons: it's heavy, shoulder straps suck, and the pin in the locking mechanisms are notorious for sheering off. Mine did it first time. Contacted XOP however and they sent me four new assemblies no questions asked so I now have 3 spares. Issue can be fixed with a tac weld.

Also be aware using climbing sticks is going to test your legs and knees, I know after my first few uses I felt like I did leg day in the gym after a long layoff. I replaced the straps with a Molle ii system and it's great now but still on the heavy side which is completely different than I had expected tree stand weight with 4 sticks and molle system is 33lbs vs 22 lbs summit Goliath but it's sleaker and I don't hit has many trees walking with the XOP. That's all I can think of at the moment

i really want to be able to hang on public land, and just take out my bottom 1 or two sticks. maybe 1 stick with a loop extension. anybody ever done that with any success (success = not getting stolen)?

Yes I do it myself when the situation permits. I have even hidden my bottom stick somewhere on way out to keep from carrying it back and forth. This will keep most honest as it would require much more effort to steal.
