I went out to move my older ladder stand this week and it is toast. I am in the market for a climbing stand, though not looking to break the bank. Can any of you fellas give me some insight on what not to get???
 
summit all they way. get in touch with gatornbuck and get you a good summit climbing stand. gator has the best prices around
 
Are you using it for Rifle/Bow?

I have a Summit and I love it. May be a little overpriced but it is light and certainly gets the job done. I also like the fact that I can buy an upper assembly from them and not have to worry about buying a completely new climber.

When I was new to climbing I bought one with a bar that went across the upper assembly. This was great for my rifle because it was a superb shooters rest; but not so good for my bow hunting. I had to completely stand up and make sure the bow had enough clearance over the bar. For that reason, I bought a new upper assembly that is an open shot. I can take shots sitting down or stand up if absolutely necessary.

You may be wiser than I and not need that advice.
 
Pretty much depends on how you plan to use it (and, of course, your budget).

If you plan to pack it in and out with every hunt, or have to tote it a long distance, it's hard to beat the Summit stands and other similar climbers. The Lone Wolf is supposed to be a dream to pack in and out, but i have heard that they are not very comfortable. Maybe someone who uses one can chime in.

If you will be leaving it in place for extended periods, or have a short pack in, i like the Gunslinger. They are real proud of it, but if you hunt long sits or all day, it is worth it.
 
Muzzle/Rifle hunting is what I would use it for. As far as packing it in, I won't have to hike too far. $200 is what the Chairwoman has budgeted for me to spend. I have a buddy that has a Gorilla but only used it twice last year so I'm not counting on him to give me an accurate review.

There is a Summit Goliath ITB on the classifieds going for $260. Pretty good deal, as they are about $300 plus tax at Bass Pro.

I have 4 climbers, and I use the Goliath about 90% of the time. It is ultra roomy and comfortable. It might be worth a few hunny-do's to try to get another $60 from the boss.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but how did you go about getting just the open shot upper? I had the same plan in mind (getting an open shot for bow, but sticking with my viper for rifle), but would love to spare the exrta expense.
 
If your going to hunt there alot put another ladder stand up. I have no use for a climber if i dont have to use one. To much hassle :D

Don't get one of the old Baker's
I've got a Summit Titan. I'm 6'5", 220#. Best stand I've ever owned. Safe (with a harness), comfortable, durable.
