Clear cuts

Any of u guys hunt cut overs? Needs some advice on hunting a cut that is about a year old. Found a good established traveled trail.... Also found a lot of sign off the end of a point in the cut that borders a deep and long hollow and forms an edge where it meets hard woods....

We usually hunt them from ridge tops where we can just see as much of it as possible. A couple guys hunt them when it's super cold during the middle of the day to catch deer trying to sun.

Were they replanted back in pine? Scout the edges. Find where the deer are using crossing/entrance/exit points. Hunt high along those edges. They'll browse them heavily and before they grow up too thick I've seen a lot of chasing in them. From 2 years old through the time it takes for the pines to be too high and thick to see in I love hunting them.

I been hunting them for about 8 yrs now and killed some decent deer. Where the cutover meets the hollers is what i call the rims. The bucks like to travel the rims and cruise for does. They can see down hollers and sides of ridges, plus pick up a few acorns too. If some bordering farms have crops and hardwoods you season will get even better later in season when deer get pressured harder. It gets hard sometimes finding a tree big enough to put even a ladder stand on! Its stressful hunting but can be very rewarding! Good luck

Years 2-6 are when a clear cut is prime. Lots of browse in cutover especially if it's natural regrowth.

My two favorite places to hunt are clear cuts and powerlines. Two places that offer browse and cover. Climb to the clouds so you can see more ground.

get a place you can see in all directions and still see the wood line and you be fine.

Tripod stand in the middle if you're comfortable with longer ranges. Some of the best hunting there is, especially the 2nd and 3rd years after the cutting.
