Cleaning up a select cut

My lease has approx. 730 acres of select cut wood. We still have a lot of decent sized trees. The problem is the amount of tree tops and fallen trees. My deer population is great. I would like to clear a lot to add more food plots, but also increase the turkey habitat. What would be the best way to do this on a large scale (50-100 acres at a time)?

A dozer,but why clean it all up?It will grow up thick and provide plenty of browse an cover.I would only clean up the areas for food plots.

I am trying to create a more diversified terrain for turkeys and deer. The select cut is great for bedding areas, but since we have so much of it, we can create some open areas for more nesting areas.

Rent a skidsteer

I would rent a skidsteer and with that much topped trees you can move them where you want to make bedding areas for them and also clear food plots sections.

Make sure you clear it with the landowner first. You can do a lot of damage to standing timber by shoving those tops around and scraping trees.

Id clean just for plots. Turkeys loved the tree tops on my place after select cutting !

if you are in a flood plain you cannot clear anything, its against the law

Those tree tops are great for nesting, don't remove all of them. Like stated above, clean up only what needed. Its hard work, but what you clean up can be sold for firewood if you cut to 16 inches or less. A lot of chainsaw work there, but if you own the land or get landowners approval that firewood would pay for the plot work at $40 a rik
