CICADAS ARE HERE!!!!!!

Dog was chomping on something. I looked down, and there were several crawling around on the ground. I looked a little harder and found maybe a hundred or so in one area. They're starting to climb the tree trunks looking to molt. In about a week, fishing is going to be freaking unbelievable!!!!

I found one wing from a periodical (13-year) cicada today, but have not seen or heard any yet.

They should be out any time here. Franklin is just south of Nashville.

Fishing is going to be great... I hope for catfish too.

The annual cicadas come out every year. they are the big green/black ones. the periodicals are smaller with red eyes.

What recipe do you use for them?

Puppydawg seems to like them whole with husk, wings and all. I like to wait until they've molted, then take off their wings. A little paprika does wonders for presentation but not much for flavor. Tequila helps with that.

I'll never forget the last hatch. I was fishing the Caney with ultralight. A Cicada landed on my shirt I changed my lure to a #8 hook and put him on. 1st cast as soon as it hit the water, fish on! I went under one of the bridges and started collecting them and proceeded to have one of the best days I have ever had fishing. Almost every cast produced a fish.

What is good cicada mimic lure? I have some small Jitter bugs and
pop'rs I though about trying. (Can't use live bait in a Bass TX.)

Most fun you can have with your clothes on is a fly rod, a cicada imitation and voracious carp. We have had a ball the last 2 cycles here.

they all seem to sound the same when their in the mood...by gaad...i will sell my wife and divorce the kids for em........

no seriously, fishing will be good when their hatching in masses.

i remember when i was a kid, i used to tie a string around em and try to make em fly, but they dont fly so well

They are hatching in mass around here. I mean millions of them. It sounds like a low roar out here when they all get started making noise. Every tree in my yard has several cast skins hanging on them.

I have seen every stage of their transformation today. I decided after I read Gils post to go learn all I could about them today.
I have thrown some in water just to see how they react and what movement they make. They are sort of lethargic when they first emerge. But when they get dried out and ready to fly they are fast.

When "they" hatch, any small lure that floats, will work. In the creeks that I fished 13 years ago, I had a crick hopper and the smallest floating Rapala.

Didn't matter. I believe if I had had just a hook, I could have put a almost any thing on it and caught fish.

I guess you could relate it to chumming. I also guess the "chum" was live cicadas.

I thought for you the most fun would be killing a turkey.

Good to know the carp will be eating them too. Gonna be catching all the cicadas I can and hooking em on live and catching everything.

I wonder if the turkeys will be more active eating them or not.

I am seeing them come up everywhere that flooded last year. Apparently they were unaffected by the flood, so keep your eyes peeled. They are coming out all over the place now.

Saw our first two in Bellevue this morning, right in the flood zone so I guess they didn't drown. Our cat didn't know what to make of them.
