ACTUALLY, assuming this buck will in fact be 3 1/2 about November,
for biological & harvest data purposes,
calling him "3 1/2" even in the preceding June is the correct way of stating his age

Male deer are usually just broken down into "cohorts"
of age classes . . . . . .
representing their ages in the their first fall (November) following birth/birthdate . . . .

Fawns (0.5 yr), Yearlings (1.5 yrs), 2 1/2's, 3 1/2's, 4 1/2's, etc.

When you get some later October pics,
he may start looking more like a 4 1/2 or older buck.
