Cherokee to release deer in Great Smokies

Doomed.........."epic fail" comes to mind.

The only reason this is getting done is because one of the big wigs on the reservation is now on the commission. There were a $hit-ton trapped and brought in in the 70's to the same area. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I see this as a complete waste of NCWRC effort and time.
 
From the articles, it appears that they understand habitat is key. Big mature forests in mountain terrain isn't very good deer habitat.

With the type of poverty and lack of care in that area, the safe bet would be they will be poached out in <10 years.....
 
If they improve the habitat like they mention, all they need to do is start logging, which is free, generates money! I think its a good idea
 
Habitat improvement will be crucial, as that area is mostly just big woods timber like much of the entire Smoky mtns area.
 
I don't see why they need to bring deer in. If they do the habitat improvements they are talking about, the deer that are already there in sparse numbers will come. There are no places in the southeast that have zero deer anymore.

:grin: No kidding! The habitat is pretty much exactly the same in that area, and like I said, habitat improvement will be crucial if they are to do good because it is LIKE much of the Smoky mtns!!!! Btw where is this reservation land located? Does it not pretty much butt up to the Smoky mtns??

it does. but it opens up into the oconoluftee valley. not all old growth forest at all.
 
I like it. I've worked with the Cherokees on some elk issues in the past. They are smart people and they understand the habitat issues. As for the comment about poverty, dude, they have the Harrah's casino and their tourism numbers are off the charts. They will do fine. I was impressed with them. There is a reason they were called the Civilized Tribe.
 
They did not release elk. The elk from the Smokies started using reservation lands and the Cherokees decided they were an asset. They wanted to improve habitat for them. They considered going and getting more elk, but never did it.

Surprised the park service released elk when you can't hunt in national parks. What happens when they exceed the carrying capacity?

The deer herd got out of control in Cades Cove without any hunting.

Did they ever mention a scenario of what they would do IF the elk in the Smokey's got overpopulated? Just move them again? because they are growing in numbers.

Lol. Sure. I've known several that lived on the reservation and they are not shy at all about telling you how life really is. Yes the casino is there and does very well, but if you go through there much, you can attest that it is basically a billion dollar structure sitting in the midst of a ghetto. Residents of the reservation get their yearly checks, but a very high percentage of 18-20 year olds blow it within a week of getting it. It's actually very sad. And if you think for one minute that the same kind of people that will blow 8-10k on video games, shoes and drugs won't go out and poach deer, you are sadly mistaken. I'm not knocking the Cherokee people, I'm just telling you what I've been told by those who couldn't wait to get out the reservation to get away from there. They took it upon themselves to educate themselves and use the casino money to better themselves and their future and are now very successful individuals. They will all tell you the same thing I just told.

Yes, I do not doubt the elders are very smart people and are very aware of the habitat needs.............but the elders are'nt the issue......
