Anyone hunting or heard of how Cheatham WMA is doing these days? It has been about 4 years since we have been up there but I want to go again this year and carry my son who has never been on a camping deer hunt.

Any other good WMA's out there with good camp grounds around? I have camped Laurel hill and Catoosa but both were draw hunts.
 
Don't waste your time. Cheatham is great for watching trees grow but the deer herd was devastated a few years ago and has not and will not recover under current management. For the last three or four years, a total of less than 50 deer have been taken off twenty thousand acres. Pitiful.
 
way to much traffic with cars driving thru and the ability to hunt anything and everything. Put it on a draw and see how quick it rebounds.

Seems to me, if less than 50-deer have been killed and the herd is still not rebounding, it has nothing to do with management. I can still model a deer herd a little and if you are only killing 15-17 deer per year, your herd should not be affected any more than if there was no hunting at all. Makes me think the problem is not management at all.
 
TYPO - its only been 4 years, not 44. I am aware of how hard this area was hit with the disease a few years back but in hopes it has at least started its climb back to what it used to be. Some friends of mine have had some cameras out there, one off pipeline and a few off a road to the left before the range, seen a few decent bucks not a lot of deer on them but some. Had them out there in the spring also and seen a lot of deer then on them. Going more for the experience than the kill anyways on this trip, would be nice to at least see some deer. Anyone know if it is still pressured as much as it was a few years back?

Bowriter, I have seen some of your post on here and know your knowledge of the area, plan on trying a couple of your old stomping grounds out. In the past I focused mostly on Pipeline but the last time I was there I remember they were clearing a lot off there.

When I hunted it years ago, it was great. Don't know if Randy Cromer is still the biologist, but super nice guy, and was super helpful with sharing info on what he saw and where
 
I hunted turkey out there and it "seems" like a great place. I saw a few turkey and jumped a few deer when there. I can't say much more than that but if it were closer I would definitely give it another go.

I highly respect the area manager, and wouldn't change a thing. He can't eliminate poaching, and it'll simply take time for the herd to get back to what it was. It's rebounded a lot already, though.
 
Go to the road behind the Ranger's residence. It goes back about 2-3 miles I believe. The last time I was there was at least 4-5 years ago and they had done some clear cutting. That stuff is probably pretty nasty now. Might be worth checking out especially if the hunting pressure kicks up.
