Alright this is my first year hunting cheatham, its the only place I know to go, I got out of the military in april and moved here. I have seen decent rubs, a few scrapes, and lots of tracks. I have seen one deer since Ive been hunting there. I have been around eight times. Im hunting the south part on sams creek road. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dont know what I'm doing wrong.

It's hard huntin out there, the really only tip I got is hunt around and beside the property lines. We had a lot of success over the years huntin like that.

Been hunting Cheatham for 30 plus years. They were hit hard with EHD a few years back. Plus the spot we hunted you had to walk in-now they have opened the ridge to vehicle traffic all the way to the end. I still enjoy hunting there but don't see the deer we use to. Good luck to you.
Try little bethany creek rd get in behind some of those big thickets but... The best advice I was given about cheatham was of you can't hear the rd your to far I have killed several deer there and wish I could make time to get back out there
Yea thats about exactly whete im hunting at, past the dump, went today afternoon and covered down on scent, noise, everything, and nothing. The one thing i havent found is their beds, i feel like if i could find that maybe i could do better but who knows, thanks for the replies, maybe when the rut heats up ill see some. I thought east Nc was hard huntin but at least i seen deer there

If you are former military you need to get to hunting ft Campbell. You will have priority on the areas you will hunt. Deer are thick out there with world class bucks. Pm me if you are it is something you want to do and I'll help you all I can
Cheatham is super tough for many reasons. EHD is one but there was an enormous doe harvest one year before EHD.

Last time we went was the year after the EHD. We saw one deer the whole weekend I think. The year before that we left with an 8 point and a doe. Find a thicket and hang tight to the edge.

The doe I killed there didn't have any hair on her belly from crawling through them clear cuts if that tells you anything.
Ok I'm take back all the bad things I've said about cheatham..l started hunting cheatham when I was around 16 and hunted there for yrs without seeing anything then when I got back into hunting I switched to ft Campbell...now I've killed out at ft I w stuck with cheatham ..I did a quick scout Saturday morn ..sitting at home I pulled out my topo and found 4 places and marked them into my gps..took off around 10:00 am and didn't even change into hunting cloths all I put on was my snake boots and orange I wanted to cover a lot of land fast...all areas had rubs and deer sign ..the last area I checked was a long ridge with a saddle got to the bottom of the ridge and there was a thicket with a huge rub line so I picked me out a tree for Sunday afternoon and left has soon has the lighting started Saturday eve..come back Sunday and a deer had bedded by the tree I had picked out...I climb tree and let 2 bucks walk and also seen doe and button....all and I will add I could see cars traveling the main road

I've had good luck seeing deer there. don't be alarmed if you hear the shooting range. the twra guy there says this is the best location as they're used to the shooting from the range and have learned to almost ignore it..
so go to the checking station. head towards the star - once you leave the area of the checking station its literally 50-75 yards past the boundary line to turn right.

Yea I am kicking myself in the butt for not going to ft cambell, I'm med retired so i know I could get on there, but its probably too late now. Yea I think im going to do the same thing you did joker, just restart and regroup. The deer there dont make any sense, I figured they would be further in, in some thick stuff but from what i hear its the oposite. Yall are great, I couldnt beat any info out of anyone in Nc. yeah I have gone 3 or 4 times.. Seen rubs and plenty of other sign but only a spike. I hunt around big ridges that someone alluded to earlier. It is a hell of a walk up and even worse of a drag but I think there are big deer out there so its worth it.
As for leaving unlocked stands out, you guys should get a bicycle chain and lock it to a tree! lol that way they either have to break the lock or cut down the tree.

Two years ago, whent hey first started stocking and relocating bears to Cheatham, there was a big shift in the deer population. Since then, it has been difficult to pin deer down.
However, now that I think back on it, I started hunting Cheatham in about 1976. I believe the key to finding great stand trees at that time was extensive scouting. If you try that and I mean really scout, you should have a pretty goo dyear next year. You may have to wear out a pair of boots but here is a tip. Start looking close to the road for natural places that deer would cross.

I seen 4 does and a pretty nice half rack buck. If he would had the other side he would have been died.. I did hear 3 shots this afternoon.
