I saw a buck chasing two does on the southern end of Franklin county this morning about 10:30. :shock: Must have been one of those special mornings when the critters were feeling extra good because there were bunches of deer moving all over as I drove around farm country for about an hour. Too bad deer season is over.
 
The best part about that is the herd is healthy enough that the bucks are able to hold their antlers this long. In a unhealthy herd bucks can drop their horns before season even ends! Chasing a small doe(8 month old)? I've seen bucks breed small does as late as april. A very small percentage of them will even drop from what I read.
 
This was near Elora. The does were splitting up and the ol' boy looked like he didn't know which one to follow. :)

Yeah, I like that the bucks around my place keep their antlers until the end of March. Of course part of that may be because their antlers aren't heavy enough to fall off. :(
 
Bucks will chase does as long as they have antlers (testosterone to hold antlers). Some does (ranges between 5 and 10%) cannot conceive. They will enter estrus over and over again, and bucks will chase and breed them each time. But because the does cannot conceive, the breeding does nothing, and the doe again enters estrus 28-30 days later. This process continues from peak breeding into as late as April.

I had never considered that 5-10% of does and them cycling again and again. Hummmm. Good info.
