My daughter really likes deep fried turkey. So, it was always on the schedule for me to do one on Thanksgiving and Christmas day. There were no total disasters, but I did have oil get way to hot one year and found out it doesn't cool down very fast. That one was charred on the outside, but the meat was still OK. We did a bunch of great turkeys over the years.
But, the price of oil got expensive because that was the only two times we would end up using it even with "good" intentions to do another couple over the winter. So, when I saw a thread on Tndeer this fall about the Big Easy, I was intrigued. The price was low enough that not buying oil for 2-3 years would pay for it even if we didn't use it for anything else.
The first one I did on Thanksgiving was good, but maybe not up to the "oil" level. I found out it takes a LONG time for it to reach the 165 deg mark. But, it doesn't take much watching while it is cooking unlike cooking in oil. The one we just did for Christmas was better as my wife used more of the Cajun injection. It was at least as good as an oil fried bird.
So, if time is limited, it may not be the best way. But, if you have the time, it is pretty painless to put it in and basically forget about it while it cooks. I'm pleased with the purchase.
If anyone has used it for some other meats besides turkey, I'd love to hear the details.
