I'm slowly working my way through the process of tidying up my hedgerows and wonder about the benefit to wildlife of leaving cedar snags standing vs dropping them within the hedgerow. Those that are less than 5ft I just drop, but many others are a little more substantial. A dead but standing cedar lasts a long, LONG time but is there any more value to leave it standing vs. felling in place?
 
I would drop them for rabbitat. I you dont care about rabbitat then you might cut up some of the 6" and bigger ones and sell them for posts. Some mills will even buy some of the bigger stuff in places if you have enough. I cant see much value to leaving them standing but certainly could be something Im not seeing.
 
Not a bad idea to leave them on the north and west side of your fod plots/stand locations for a wind break
 
I like having a few cedars around. It's one of a bucks favorite trees to rub, and I like seeing them.

A cedar thicket is not only a deer's friend, but it is a good friend to many other species of wildlife. Excellent winter cover for many animals. Depending on how wide the "hedgerow" is, there are many benefits there as well.
