Food Plots cedar thicket food plot

I cleared a cedar thicket on a ridge that has poor dry soil and am just wondering if anyone has planted in the same type of soil and what they planted. I'm going to get a soil test done here soon.

I did a small one. I put 5 bags of lime on this 0.13 acre plot. Worked it in then spread winter wheat & rye over it just before a rain. Created a beautiful little plot. I think @catman has small one that he has video on his youtube channel killing a doe off of.

There is a reason the soil grew up in cedars... terrible dirt, or tons of rocks... but yes, it is possible to reclaim the ground and make it productive. But expect a several year process... dont get discouraged if it doesn't produce well the first year. Get the soil sample asap and lime asap before the ground gets soft from late fall temps and moisture.

In my area typically if an area is only cedars it's rocky and not much else will grow there. I'd lime it and throw out rye and wheat , they will grow on most anything. You will know more next spring about the soil and can go from there. I'm sure it's very acidic right now.

Agree with other suggestions....lime it...you can do pelletized lime by hand and sow cereal rye and winter wheat just before a good rain.

Add some purple top turnips and diacon radish to help with soil texture and to mine minerals from down below.

Wheat rye and crimson clover for fall with lots and lots of lime. In February, lime it again and sow some white and red clover.
