I will not hunt it on a buck only hunt, but I go as many days as I can during the open bow hunt! Took me a while to find some good spots, but I regularly see deer there now.
 
There are alot of hunters that go there,true, but I have seen deer almost everytime I have been. Most of my buddies have scored with either a buck or hog, now I am just waiting for my turn. The camping experience alone makes it worth the trip, I have made alot of good friends there in the campgrounds.
 
we hunt catoosa every year cause its close. and my dad took a doe in bow season and i seen one outta shooting rang with a bow. But the buck only hunts I do not like never had any luck and dont even see deer. But im sure we will be there again this year just for that chance a big one might walk by. But Lbl is a Much better hunt seen many deer including 3 bucks. And finally taking a 11 point and thats just been in the last 2 trips out there.

I've killed a buck there every year except last year since the antler restrictions. Some years 2 if I get both the first gun hunt and the Mzl hunt. Never killed a real big one but I figure that's because the first one with 4 on one side gets it. :D
 
Khawk, what part of Catoosa do you hunt? We used to hunt the Bicolor side most of the time, lately for the last 6 yrs or so we have had better luck on the Genesis side. We camp at peavine.
 
Me and my Dad have hunted there ten years without killing a deer. Always see them but never had a shooter pass by. Seem like we could always find good sign they would just get killed before they could make it passed us. Until this year found a place where we only saw two other people for a change. My brother was drew with us this time his first morning he killed a massive 8. The following week on the muzzleloader HUNT I was fortunate to kill an 8 as well. Needless to say plan on bow hunting that area before the drawed hunts this year.

Genesis is where I've generally hunted. Although last year I went for the open gun hunt and basically used it as a scouting trip and focused primarily on the bi-color side. I spent an entire day looking over a section of the oak restoration area. If you've never checked that specific area out, it'd be worth your time.
 
Its one of the best options available for a Public land shot at a good buck in the Eastern half of the state , especially without spending a lot of time finding other public areas that hold good deer and aren't overcrowded. Its a huge area and you can ALWAYS get away from the crowd if your willing to do so. Its not the easiest place to hunt from a physical standpoint, but again the potential to kill a mature buck is definitely there on this public area for those who think a lil out of the box!

IMPRESSIVE. I looked at the TWRA website and from 2008-2012, there were only 210 bucks aged 3-1/2 or older killed included in a total of 930 bucks killed in that time frame (I am not sure when antler restrictions were imposed). Not including open hunts there were 6,000 quota permits (30,000 from 2008-2012-3.1 percent chance of killing a buck and .7 percent chance of killing a 3-1/2 or older buck) last year with 167 bucks killed and only 31 of those were 3-1/2 or older. I am not a numbers person but looks like really low chances of killing a buck there, even lower chances of killing a better buck, last year I get your chances of killing (when compared to total number of hunters) a 3-1/2 year old or older buck is .5 percent. I know I would be hard pressed to go to Catoosa and just see a buck every year.

I was blessed to kill one of those 31 bucks over 3 1/2 last year. He was 4 1/2 and I got him on the first hunt. On the second hunt, I passed on an 8 because I couldn't see his eye guards....my brother killed him 5 minutes later and he was 3 1/2. Luck or skill, it worked out for us!
 
I realize that I have found one of those spots that the deer go when the pressure is on. I've never seen another hunter ether. I'll give you a little hint though, I can hear the road very well. So going deep isn't always the best idea on Catoosa
