Tell me something about this artificial velvet. I'm supposing it's a spray??? Do taxidermists use this on velvet racks? I suppose you could make any rack a velvet rack?
 
Depending on the state of the velvet dictates what should be done to preserve it. One I did from KY last year was done growing and days away from being completely shed...I tanned the antlers with velvet on and they will be fine.
If they are still growing they need to be injected with something to preserve them and push the blood out.
Im not 100% certain but I think Jones offers a type of velvet "replacement". Meaning it is artificial, looks good and will last a lifetime...but has a cost associated with it. No worries about bugs and etc. When in doubt, go artificial.

Since I no longer fool with taxidermy I haven't looked at a catalog in several years. If it comes as a spray I may get some and do a couple of racks I have lying around just to see how it looks.
 
I assure you there is more to it than just a spray. There is a spray on adhesive but there is a electro magnetic process that causes the velvet type material to adhere to the antlers in a smooth even coating. Without going into great detail maybe Mr. Jones would want to reveal the process if he likes. His son is the one who does the velveting and repro antlers creations. Best I have seen. I had one done a few years back by him for one that I mounted up.
 
This buck was killed during the regular rifle season .. It is what I call a stag buck no devoleped testicles the antlers remain in velvet and grow year round .. The velvet was in bad shape when the deer was shot and that is why artifical was put on it ... To answer your question artifical velvet can be put on any antlers real or replica and there is more to it than just spraying it out of a can ..as stated above the fibers are applied with a electro static device that make the fibers stand on end like real hair
